Merak Sakteng Trek

One of the newest Merak Sakteng treks in Bhutan stands out as a distinct attraction in Bhutan. The scenic valley located at the remotest eastern part of Bhutan offers an experience of a unique semi-nomadic lifestyle, culture, and dialect. The trek runs through the protected area of Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary in eastern Bhutan, which is home to endangered species of animal-like snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan fox, and black bear. Day 1 Trashigang – Chaling Damnongchu

Distances: 6 hours, Campsites Altitudes: 3124m

The trek starts from Chaling village with a gradual ascend to Shaktimi meadow. Make a stopover and make it the best time to yak herder’s camp and yak and sheep grazing in the extensive pastureland. Reached to Donmongchu, making further ascend passing the Mindrla pass, Rhododendron forest. Overnight at the campsites.

Day 2 Damnongchu – Merak

Distances: 4- 5 hours, Campsite Altitude: 3520m

Start your day, making a gentle ascend through the blend of forest and river bends. Arrives Merak crossing the Gangu village with unique walk loops. Enjoy your time with the people of Merak and spectacular view of mountains and beautiful village. Overnight at the campsite.

Day 3 Merak – Miksateng

Distances: 6 hours, Campsites Altitude: 3079m

Making a gradual ascend with a final glimpse of Merak village from the campsite through juniper and rhododendron forest will reach Nachung pass at the elevation of 4153m. Spend your time relaxing at the keys enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Further will go to Miksakteng at the height of 3079m. Overnight at the campsites.

Day 4 Miksakteng – Sakteng

Distances: 5 hours, Camp Altitude: 2950m

Continuing your journey, descending along the river banks and gradual climb will reach a place where a small stupa was built adorned with colorful prayer flags. Enjoy the surrounding by making your time to stop over there. You might spot Red panda, depending on your luck. Further, making descending walk at sakteng villages. Overnight at the campsite.

Day 5 Sakteng

Since Sakteng is very much the remotest village with unique culture, dialects, and lifestyle, enjoy exploring around the town, mingle with the most welcoming smile people to gain unique life experiences. Overnight at the campsite.

Day 6 Sakteng – Joenkhar Teng

Distances: 7 hours, Campsites Altitude: 1733m

Unfold day doing the small climb until the end of the village, descend to the river, and continue your journey alongside it through the broadleaf forest. Reaching the Joenkhar Teng village is fantastic. It is situated at the hillside, and its population comprises Brokpa and sharchops.

Overnight at the campsites.

Day 7 Joenkhar Teng – Trashigang

Your last day trek will start short climbing up and through the Joenkhar Teng. Making your journey with ascend crossing few suspension bridges will reach to beautiful Phonmey village. Enjoy your drive to Trashigang, crossing the famous Radhi village, which is very popular for Bura Gho and Kira. Make a stopover at Rangjung, explore the small town. Overnight at the hotel.
